The Prophet Always Arrives with an Awkward Limp: Decentering the Future in the Politics of Foresight
Bayo Akomolafe, Ph.D.
International Speaker, Posthumanist Thinker, Poet, Teacher, Public Intellectual, Essayist, and Author
At a time of troubling uncertainty, when an Anthropocene-sponsored pandemic mocks human agency and its presumptuous claims to mastery, it may not seem useful to speak of ‘the prophet’ and ‘prophecy’. It would seem that these are not serious matters of concern when it comes to understanding the future. However, we ask: what if the future is an effect of specific sociomaterial arrangements – instead of being a fait accompli, already made, awaiting discovery?
In this talk, Bayo Akomolafe revisits the concept of the future and our fascinating fixations with it, while exploring how our one-faced, modern orientation to it is implicated in the preservation of troubling civilizational features. He calls for prophecy as an aesthetic of accountability that exceeds the act of predicting what might yet be and invites one to lose one’s way to break through to potentially new temporalities. As such, he reconceptualizes foresight as a sensuous decolonial exploration of fugitive temporalities – where the future is not the only thing to look forward to.
