Let Them Eat Cake: The Tyranny of Privileged Futures
An ongoing challenge of good foresight work is ensuring that our efforts are inclusive of all voices rather than only those who wield the privilege that money, position and technological access afford. All too often, it is this latter group that is deciding the future for the majority of humanity – and who often make things much worse. Privileged futures results in a perpetuation of the dominant narratives which are often classist, suffocating and destructive to the creative spirit that springs forth from diversity and cooperation. If humanity is to thrive, the future cannot be an aristocracy!
